Toward The Stars

Today we have invited the Head Girl of the Girl Museum to guest post on our blog.
We are Girl Museum, the world’s first and only museum in the world dedicated to the celebration of girlhood. We are a museum without walls or even objects; we are a virtual space for research, exhibitions and education centered wholly on the subject of being a girl. Our aim is to explore and document the unique experience of growing up female through historic and contemporary images, stories and material culture. Through the history of art and cultural images, we want to raise global awareness about the realities and issues, both nature and nurture, facing girls yesterday, today and tomorrow.

When describing our mission, we are often asked two questions: how can we be a museum without physical objects? And what exactly is girlhood?

Museums have historically always been a way of telling a narrative of history through objects. Yet increasingly they are becoming spaces where people regardless of category can come together and engage in discourse. In this context, the Internet provides the perfect venue for removing traditional barriers that prevent people visiting museums. We are open 24/7/365 and apart from the cost of an Internet connection and the electricity used, we are free. Using our exhibitions, projects, blogs, and other social media tools we aim to communicate to everyone the experience of being a girl, yesterday and today.

Girls are and have always been everywhere and yet we are historically under-represented. With relatively little material culture or written words created by or about girls that has been deemed worthy to record or archive, we want to become a resource that anybody can use to explore the continually changing process of becoming and being a girl, past, present and future.

We hope to become a hub of knowledge, exploration and exchange for girls and about girls, celebrating their achievements and standing up for their rights. Please visit our site to see our current exhibitions as well as joining in the discussions on our blog , Twitter, Facebook  and Pinterest  sites.
